Ann Thorac Surg. 1996 Jan;61(1):393-5. doi: 10.1016/0003-4975(95)00945-0.

Abstract

Battery-powered, vented left ventricular assist devices are designed to provide long-term circulatory support and an enhanced qualify of life. Their ongoing evolution into an effective clinical tool to treat patients with severe heart failure has resulted from the efforts of many, the open communication among researchers involved in the program, and the strong support from the National Institutes of Health.
