Sodium extrusion mechanism in mammalian cochlear outer hair cell

Abstract

Intracellular sodium concentration ([Na+]i) in isolated outer hair cells (OHCs) of guinea pig cochlea was measured by microfluorimetric method using sodium binding benzofuran isophthalate. An application of ouabain increased [Na+]i. Our results suggest that OHCs have the definite activity of Na+/K+ ATPase.
