Arrector pili muscles surround human facial vellus hair follicles

Br J Dermatol. 1993 Aug;129(2):138-9. doi: 10.1111/j.1365-2133.1993.tb03515.x.

Abstract

Arrector pili muscles have been assumed to attach to one side of the hair follicle, specifically the posterior wall of the bulge area. In this study, we demonstrated immunohistochemically that desminreactive arrector pili muscle, admixed with the connective tissue sheath, is present around the entire circumference of the vellus hair follicle.
