Pharmacokinetic monitoring of heparin therapy for regular hemodialysis

Artif Organs. 1985 Feb;9(1):59-61. doi: 10.1111/j.1525-1594.1985.tb04348.x.

Abstract

Using a pharmacokinetic model for heparin prescription during hemodialysis leads to a precise monitoring of the coagulation time (CT) with 25% less heparin required. Two different populations were distinguished: The first group maintained stable sensitivity and elimination constant, permitting a stable prescription and giving stable CT values for up to 2 years. The other group exhibited wide variations of these parameters, necessitating daily dose monitoring.
