Abstract

The etiologic agent of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is virus belonging to Flaviviridae. The infection of humans is caused by bites of infected ticks. The disease is reported mainly in endemic regions. TBE is characterised by seasonal increase in the incidence of the disease. Depending on localizaiton of the inflammatory process in the central nervous system following clinical forms might be specified: meningitis, encephalomeningitis, meningoencephaloradiculitis and meningoencephalomyelitis. After TBE there are serious sequelae observed e.g. various neurological syndromes, mental and intellectual disorders.
