Prosthetic materials and wound healing. Critical evaluation of six different materials

Int Surg. 1978 Jan;63(1):7-9.

Abstract

Six different materials (three mesh and three cloth) commonly used for the repair of abdominal wall hernias were evaluated in 180 rats. Macroscopic, bacteriologic, mechanical and histologic criteria were used to investigate tolerance and resistance of the foreign material. Findings demonstrate the superiority of mesh over cloth materials.
