The current management of thyroid cancer

Adv Surg. 1999:33:1-27.

Abstract

Thyroid cancer constitutes 1% of solid organ malignancies. The majority of patients with thyroid carcinoma are cured with adequate surgical management. Table 6 summarizes our standard initial treatment of PTC, follicular cancers, MTC, Hürthle cell carcinomas, thyroid lymphoma, anaplastic carcinoma, and metastases to the thyroid. It is paramount that thyroidectomy be performed by an experienced surgeon to avoid morbidity that would compromise the quality of life in individuals anticipated to enjoy long-term survival.
